Gaddafi guards raped kids: Amnesty
August 27th, 2011 - 8:04 pm ICT by IANSLondon, Aug 27 (IANS) Prison guards loyal to Muammar Gaddafi raped child detainees, human rights group Amnesty International has said.
Amnesty also accused some Libyan rebels of attacking children and imprisoning migrant workers, says the Daily Express.
The group has compiled a dossier of reported abuse from interviews with prisoners and survivors of the civil war.
It said it found evidence of child rape in Tripoli’s Abu Salim prison while under Gaddafi’s control.
Two boys told their prison mates they had been raped on numerous occasions by a guard.
A prisoner said that one night a boy returned to his cell almost naked with his clothes torn, and said he had been raped.
Other detainees said they were beaten with metal wire, sticks and batons and given electric shocks.
A boy who fought on the side of Gaddafi’s regime said he was shot in the knee and beaten by rebel troops who found him in the western city of Zawiya.
Amnesty said that, despite promises by the rebel National Transitional Council that it would avoid human rights violations, the rights group had found about 125 people in a single cell with barely room to move. Several of them said they were migrant workers and had no involvement with the fighting.
Neither side has commented on the Amnesty report.
