May 19th, 2011 - 7:55 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattNew York, May 19 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Injured Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is on course to recover from a gunshot into her head, doctors say. Doctors on Wednesday carried out a milestone operation on the politician.
Giffords was shot in the head at close range in an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Tucson, Ariz. at the beginning of the year. The attacker killed six people and wounded 14 others including the Congresswoman. Though the injury to Giffords was potentially deadly, the Congresswoman has made remarkable recovery since then. She is currently undergoing rehabilitation therapy and doctors say they have achieved another milestone in the recovery of Giffords.
Doctors placed a plastic implant in the skull to fully protect the brain. The doctors said the procedure was successful and a statement assured that Giffords is recovering from the procedure. The procedure was carried out at the TIRR Memorial Hermann hospital.
Medical experts say the procedure is crucial to ensure that the Congresswoman’s quality of life improves. With the skull now repaired, the helmet that the Congresswoman has been wearing all the time will be removed after recovery.
The hospital is expected to brief the press on the recovery of Giffords on Thursday.
