Franco’s remains may be exhumed
October 10th, 2011 - 6:55 pm ICT by IANSMadrid, Oct 10 (IANS/AKI) Spain may dig up the remains of late dictator Francisco Franco to move them from a sprawling mausoleum to a cemetery, a news report said.
A commission of experts hired by the Spanish government is reviewing options on how to deal with the Valley of the Fallen, the burial place near Madrid where Franco is buried and is a controversial pilgrimage destination for Fascist sympathizers.
Franco died in 1975 after emerging as the victor in the three-year Spanish Civil War which ended in 1939.
The Valley of the Fallen holds the remains of more than 30,000 people. It is part of a Catholic basilica. Its construction was Franco’s idea and it is said that it was meant to symbolise national reconciliation.
