Former Pakistani President Musharraf launches new party
October 2nd, 2010 - 1:34 am ICT by BNO NewsLONDON (BNO NEWS) – Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf on Friday announced his return to politics by launching a new party in London in an attempt to return to power.
Musharraf also apologized for the mistakes committed during his last term as ruler of Pakistan. He has spent the last two years in the English capital due to a self-imposed exile. His new party is called the All Pakistan Muslim League (AMPL) and was unveiled by the retired general in London.
“The time has come to make Pakistan into a progressive, modern Islamic state. The new party would be a national salvation,” Musharraf said. “I have confidence I can lead Pakistan toward light.”
The former 67-year-old leader also criticizes current President Asif Ali Zardari as he considers he is failing to show any signs of improvement during these harsh times that prevail in Pakistan. He added that he will return to his native country before the next elections.
“Today there is no case against me in the courts of Pakistan. Whatever cases have been instituted, have been done on political grounds. That, I am prepared to face when I get there.”
Musharraf added that he has the experience and leadership to eliminate the Al-Qaeda threat in the mountainous tribal areas and the spread of extremism in Pakistan. He also warned that the country is at risk of a new coup against Zardari.
Musharraf came to power in a bloodless coup in 1999 and quit in August 2008 after a new government led by the party of assassinated former premier Benazir Bhutto threatened to impeach him. He was replaced by Zardari, Bhutto’s widower.
