Former Karnataka deputy chief minister Prakash dead

Bharatiya Janata Party Bangalore, Feb 9 (IANS) Former Karnataka deputy chief minister M.P. Prakash passed away here Wednesday. He was 71.A highly respected leader known for his simplicity and integrity, Prakash was also a theatre enthusiast. He had directed and acted in Kannada plays.

He was deputy chief minister in the Congress-Janata Dal-Secular coalition in 2006-07. Later he joined the Congress party protesting the JD-S not keeping its word to transfer power to the Bharatiya Janata Party with which it formed a coalition after walking out of an alliance with the Congress.

Prakash was elected to the assembly four times from Bellary district, from where he hailed.

He is survived by his wife, a son and three daughters.

The funeral will take place Thursday at Hadagali, his home town in Bellary.

Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa condoled Prakash’s death.

Schools and colleges in Bellary district will remain closed Thursday as a mark of respect to Prakash.
