Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich “saddened” but not surprisedApril 3rd, 2009 - 9:05 am ICT by admin
Chicago, ILLINOIS (BNO NEWS) — Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich says he is “saddened” but not surprised by Thursday’s indictment, according to a statement released by his PR firm which represents him.
“I’m saddened and hurt but I am not surprised by the indictment,” Blagojevich said. “I am innocent. I now will fight in the courts to clear my name”.
The indictment is the latest development in an ongoing political corruption scandal involving top officials in the state of Illinois. Blagojevich was removed from office in January.
“I would ask the good people of Illinois to wait for the trial and afford me the presumption of innocence that they would give to all their friends and neighbors,” he added. His PR firm said Blagojevich is not in Chicago and will not be doing interviews. According to the Associated Press, the former governor is currently spending family time with his wife and kids in Walt Disney World.
His family, according to the firm, has asked people to respect their privacy.
