Former Honolulu Mayor Frank Fasi dies at 89

MAIKIKI, HAWAII (BNO NEWS) – Former Honolulu Mayor Frank Fasi died Wedenesday night at the age of 89.

“Frank F. Fasi, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, died peacefully of natural causes late last night at his home in Makiki surrounded by his adoring wife and children,” Fasi’s son David said in an e-mail.

Frank Fasi was born in Hartford, Connecticut and is known as the longest serving Mayor in Honolulu’s history with 22 years of service. His first term started in 1961 although he lost his last four attempts (1994-2004)

Fasi has been described by Honolulu’s newspapers as firebrand, trailblazer and maverick.

During his tenures as Mayor he created the neighborhood board systems, established “The Bus” (a highly recognized Honolulu’s public transportation) and also invented and built the Satellite City Hall system.
