Five in Jharkhand RS race after Mishra withdraws

March 22nd, 2012 - 7:46 pm ICT by IANS

Bharatiya Janata Party Ranchi, March 22 (IANS) Independent candidate Anshuman Mishra, whose nomination as a Bharatiya Janata Party-backed candidate for the Rajya Sabha from Jharkhand had created resentment among the party, Thursday withdrew from the fray. There are five candidates now for the two seats.

Mishra, a 37-year-old businessman from London who entered the fray with support of some BJP legislators, announced his decision to withdraw Wednesday after a section of the BJP rebelled against his candidature.

His nomination was withdrawn by BJP legislator Barkuwar Gagrai, who was one of his proposers, on the last day for withdrawal of nominations.

The withdrawal leaves five candidates including two independents in the fray. They are Sanjiv Kumar of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Pradeep Balmuchu of Congress, Praveen Kumar Singh of Jharkhand Vikash Morcha-Prajatantrik, and independents R.K. Agarwal and Pawan Kumar Dhut.

The Congress had also tried to persuade its alliance partner JVM-P to withdraw its candidate but to no avail.

The poll is scheduled for March 30.
