Federal prosecutor Hochul confirmed as U.S. Attorney for the Western District of NY
March 12th, 2010 - 2:16 am ICT by BNO NewsBUFFALO, NEW YORK (BNO NEWS) – The United States Senate confirmed on Thursday the appointment of William J. Hochul Jr. as the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of New York, the New York Department of Justice announced.
Mr. Hochul is a well-recognized federal prosecutor that has handled various important cases such as the conviction of the Lackawana Six, a group that left New York to train with al-Qaeda terrorists. Since 2002, Hochul has supervised all international and domestic terrorism, organized crime, and human trafficking investigations in this area.
“I will draw on my 23 years of experience as a federal prosecutor to protect our community and to ensure the fair administration of justice. I look forward to continuing to work with the extremely professional attorneys and staff, as well as with the federal, state and local law enforcement agencies throughout the Western District of New York,” Hochul said.
The Western District of New York prosecutes all violations of the Federal Criminal Law occurring within the seventeen counties of the District. United States Attorneys are appointed by, and serve at the discretion of, the President of the United States, with advice and consent of the United States Senate.
Mr. Hochul has received many awards and commendations over his 23-year career, including the United States Attorney General’s Award for Exceptional Service; the highest award conferred by the U.S. Department of Justice.
Federal prosecutor Hochul was recommended to the post by Sen. Charles Schummer in May 2009. Later that year he was nominated by President Obama in December.
“I am extremely honored to have been recommended by Sen. Charles Schumer and nominated by the President to serve as United States attorney for the 17 counties of Western New York,” Hochul added.
