Farooq blames police for Jammu youth’s death in custody
October 18th, 2009 - 10:44 pm ICT by IANSJammu, Oct 18 (IANS) New and Renewable Energy Minister Farooq Abdullah Sunday accused the police in Jammu and Kashmir of killing a youth from Jammu who had married a Muslim girl.
Talking to media persons, the central minister said Rajneesh Sharma, who had married Ameena of Srinagar, was “killed by police” and the “guilty police officials and the family of the girl should be punished as per law of the land.”
Abdullah said it is the responsibility of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the state government to bring the culprits to justice. “These steps are necessary to establish the credibility of the government,” he said.
Sharma was arrested by Srinagar police - and allegedly tortured to death in the city’s Ram Munshi Bagh police station - on the complaints of girl’s family who alleged that he had kidnapped the “minor” Ameena.
However, Ameena, who after marrying Sharma announced she had become Hindu and taken the name Anchal, denied that she was a minor. She claimed that she was 20 and her parents had bribed the police to murder her husband.
The police, however, claimed that Rajneesh had committed suicide in the police station Oct 6.
However, the marks on his body established that he had been tortured, his family claimed.
