Faldu named new Gujarat BJP chief

Gandhinagar, Feb 1(IANS) R.C. Faldu, a three-time legislator, was Monday named the next chief of Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Gujarat unit.
Gopinath Munde, the BJP general secretary, made the announcement after a meeting of the state executive committee. Faldu will take charge Tuesday.
Faldu was the only candidate to file his nomination for the post Sunday, a day after BJP national president Nitin Gadkari’s visit to Gujarat giving a clear indication that his choice for the post had the backing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
Faldu belongs to the powerful and dominant Leuva Patel community. He replaces Purshottam Rupala.
Though Faldu has been empowered to create his own team, it is widely expected that Chief Minister Narendra Modi would have a say in setting it up.
The BJP is in the midst of a major organisational revamp with elections to local self government bodies due in the state this year.
