Kolkata, Nov 11 (IANS) With many in the 18-35 age group keeping away from polling booths, the Election Commission is endeavouring to reach out to them through social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.
“The Commission is now looking at social media like Facebook and Twitter as the hubs to impart electoral education,” Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi said at a function here.
“For whatever reason, many voters in the 18-35 age group do not exercise their voting rights,” Quraishi said while deliversing the Maulana Azad Memorial Lecture titled ‘Education for Deepening Democracy’.
The Commission was also considering roping in new and young voters through an initiative christened YUVA (Youth Unite for Voter Awareness), he added.
