Ex-premier, senior officials barred from leaving Egypt
February 13th, 2011 - 12:52 pm ICT by IANSCairo, Feb 13 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Egypt’s chief prosecutor has barred former prime minister Ahmed Nazif and other senior officials from leaving the country to prevent them from escaping corruption charges, soon after people’s protests forced president Hosni Mubarak to step down. The travel ban has also been imposed on other members of the former Egyptian cabinet, including interior minister Habib al-Adli, information minister Anas el-Fekky and tourism minister Zaher Garana, the MENA news agency said Saturday.
The Egyptian authorities have also issued a travel ban on a steel tycoon and ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) member Ahmed Ezz.
A corruption probe has been launched.
The Egyptian cabinet had resigned in late January upon a demand by president Hosni Mubarak, as a move to quell anti-government protests.
Mubarak, 82, who ruled the country for almost 30 years, stepped down Friday after 18 days of heated protests by tens of thousands of people forced him to resign.
