Ex-judge, bureaucrat to probe Adarsh scam (Lead)

Mumbai, Jan 8 (IANS) The Maharashtra government Saturday appointed a two-member committee, comprising a retired high court judge and a retired chief secretary, to probe into various aspects of the controversial Adarsh Co-Operative Housing Society in south Mumbai. The panel will submit its report within three months.”The committee will be headed by former Bombay High Court judge, Justice J. A. Patil and include retired state chief secretary P. Subramaniam as a member,” Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said here.

The committee has been set up under The Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1952, with wide terms of reference, he said, adding the committee would submit its report to the state government within three months.

The committee would consider into various aspects - like the ownership of the land on which the building has come up, whether it was reserved for widows of martyrs of the Kargil conflict, whether the adjacent road was narrowed down, the height, whether any violation of Coastal Regulation Zone notifications, whether public servants have been on the wrong side of law and how such issues could be prevented in future.

In the winter session of Maharashtra legislative at Nagpur last month, Chavan had announced that the government would form a panel to probe the entire episode.

The Central Bureau of Investigation is also inquiring into the Adarsh CHS scam which has so far led to the resignation of then chief minister Ashok Chavan, and former bureaucrat and State Human Rights Commission member Subhash Lalla.
