EU to unfreeze Libyan banks’ assets
December 22nd, 2011 - 10:16 am ICT by IANSMoscow, Dec 22 (IANS/RIA Novosti) The European Union will begin unfreezing Europe-based assets of the Libyan Central Bank and its subsidiary, Libyan Arab Foreign Bank, blocked as part of sanctions against the regime of slain Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
The move comes after the Libyan transitional government asked the UN Security Council’s committee responsible for sanctions against Libya to lift the asset freeze.
None of the 15 Security Council members objected to the request.
The US has already released over $30 billion of Libyan banks’ assets.
The Libyan banks’ assets have been frozen since March by the Security Council in compliance with the UN resolution to prevent Gaddafi from using violence against protesters.
Libya saw almost 10 months of fighting before the rebel National Transitional Council established control over the country’s territory.
Gaddafi was killed in October near his hometown of Sirte after being captured by rebel forces.
