Kolkata, Oct 12 (IANS) In the wake of rising political killings, West Bengal Governor M.K. Narayanan Tuesday said the Durga Puja festive season was “in danger of being marred by violence” and appealed to political parties to maintain peace.
The governor in a press statement urged political parties to “eschew the politics of violence and prevail upon their followers to desist from violence in the name of democracy”.
He wished joy, peace and prosperity to all the people of the state on the festive season, but expressed deep concern that the on-going violence may mar the celebrations.
“Yet, even as I offer my warm greetings to the people of West Bengal, I cannot but remark that this unique festive season in our state is in danger of being marred by violence and the wail of grieving families who have lost their near and dear ones to political clashes,” he said.
“The politics of violence has no place in democracy,” he said.
In past two years, several areas of the state like Mangolkote, Nanoor, Khejuri, Nandigram, Sashan Ketugram have witnessed clashes between the supporters of the Trinamool Congress and the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M).
The state has witnessed a series of killings in West Midnapore, Bankura, Purulia and Birbhum districts in the last couple of months.
Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has repeatedly accused the CPI-M of carrying out political killings with the help of police.
The CPI-M has in turn blamed the Trinamool for the deaths of supporters and “unleashing terror” across the state.
