Election Commission should be neutral: Karunanidhi
April 7th, 2011 - 9:33 pm ICT by IANSMadurai (Tamil Nadu), April 7 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M. Karunanidhi Thursday said the Election Commission (EC) should be neutral “like the judiciary”.
“The EC should be neutral. It should function like the judiciary. Even though the judiciary falters sometimes, the EC should see to that it does not attract such comments,” he told reporters here, around 450 km from the state capital Chennai.
He was confident of retaining power in the April 13 assembly elections.
Queried about the opposition’s charge that the state was suffering from an acute power deficit, Karunanidhi said that the demand for electricity went up in tandem with the state’s industrialisation.
He blamed the previous AIADMK government for failing to plan for this increase in demand.
Asked about the support extended by second-rung leaders of the MDMK to the DMK led front, he said the Dravidian movements should be united in achieving their goals.
When queried about AIADMK general secretary J. Jayalalithaa’s statement that she would retrieve Tamil Nadu from the brink, Karunanidhi retorted: “Let her retrieve her jewels from the Bangalore court where she is facing a case for amassing wealth in excess of her known sources of income.”
