Egypt court orders dissolution of Mubarak’s party
April 16th, 2011 - 9:32 pm ICT by IANSCairo, April 16 (IANS) Egypt’s supreme administrative court Saturday ordered the dissolution of the party of former president Hosni Mubarak and transfer of its assets to the government, state media reported.
The National Democratic Party (NDP), under the leadership of Mubarak, ruled the country for about three decades.
Mubarak was forced to step down in February after 18 days of protests over allegations of corruption and abuse of power.
NDP spokesman Nabil Luka Bibawi said the party would take legal procedures against the ruling on the dissolution, saying that corruption of one part does not make the whole corrupt, according to state news agency MENA.
The party has changed its name into New NDP and named Talaat Sadat, a nephew of assassinated president Anwar Sadat, as its new head to replace Mubarak.
Mubarak and his two sons Alaa and Gamal have been sent to detention on charges of use of violence against protesters, power abuse and embezzlement of public funds.
Egypt’s Prosecutor General Abdel-Meguid Mahmoud Wednesday ordered the detention.
All three face charges of use of violence against protesters, power abuse and embezzlement of public funds, and if held guilty would be jailed for life or hanged, MENA said.
