DMK seals one more deal

Chennai, March 2 (IANS) The ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu Wednesday sealed a seat sharing deal with a small party, MMK, in the upcoming assembly polls, taking the number of such tie-ups to four.

The MMK, mostly based among the Thevar caste, will contest one seat under DMK’s symbol, according to party sources.

DMK leader and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and MMK chief Sridhar Vandaiyar met here earlier in the day.

The DMK had earlier signed agreements with the VCK, PMK and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), allotting them 10, 31 and three seats each.

There are now 189 seats to be shared amongst the DMK, Congress and smaller parties.

The DMK will hold a third round of talks with the Congress later Wednesday night in the presence of Ghulam Nabi Azad, the Congress general secretary in charge of party affairs in Tamil Nadu.

It is believed that the Congress has demanded 80-90 of the 234 seats while the DMK is willing to part with only 53 - five more than what was given in 2006.

With the Left parties leaving the DMK-led alliance, the coalition partners expected more seats this time.

With the spectrum scam looming large, the DMK wants to contest in more seats than the 132 it fought from last time so as to have a chance of securing a majority on its own.
