Chennai, Dec 22 (IANS) Condemning what he called the “biased and step-motherly” treatment meted out to Tamil Nadu by the central government on various issues, DMDK founder-chief A.Vijayakant Thursday announced black flag demonstrations against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his visit here.
In a statement here, Vijayakant, the leader of opposition in the Tamil Nadu assembly, said: “In order to show the united opposition of the state, the DMDK will hold a black flag demonstrations on Dec 26 when the prime minister visits here.”
Vijayakant termed as “biased” the central government’s stand on issues like Mullaperiyar Dam, Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP), killing of Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan forces.
He said instead of allaying the fears of the people living in and around Kudankulam, the prime minister made “an irresponsible statement” in Russia that the reactor would start functioning in two weeks’ time.
“It only shows he does not respect Tamil lives,” Vijayakant added.
On the Mullaperiyar Dam issue, Vijayakant charged the central government with acting against Tamil Nadu. The latest instance was the setting up of a team of experts by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to formulate a contingency response plan for Mullaperiyar Dam and downstream areas if the dam bursts, he said.
As per indications, Prime Minister Singh will be on a two-day visit to Tamil Nadu from Dec 25.
On Dec 26, he will participate in the 125th birth anniversary celebrations of mathematician S.Ramanujan organised by The Institute of Mathematical Sciences, and then would leave for Karaikudi in Sivaganga district to participate in a function at Alagappa University.
He will return to New Delhi Dec 26.
