Did not buy BJP votes in council poll, says Omar

Jammu, April 16 (IANS) Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Saturday dismissed reports that seven of the 11 Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators who voted for the ruling National Congress-Congress coalition in the April 13 legislative council polls were bribed.
“There was no exchange of money between the BJP legislators and the coalition partners. All these are rumours being floated by the media,” Omar told reporters on the sidelines of a function here.
The chief minister said that the government “will not register any case as no legislator has come forward to do the same.”
“If you (media) are interested in registering the case, you can do that,” he told a reporter who persisted with questions on the cross-voting.
The ruling coalition’s two candidates from Jammu polled 60 votes, eight more than its strength in the assembly.
The National Conference won three seats in the council elections, the Congress two and the main opposition People’s Democratic Party one.
Shocked by the result, the BJP asked all its 11 legislators to tender their resignations from the assembly. They have also been summoned to Delhi April 19 (Tuesday), where the party’s national leadership will take a final call on them.
Local newspapers say a senior BJP leader’s son struck a deal with the ruling coalition for the polls.
