Department for non-resident Tamils suggested
July 3rd, 2010 - 8:18 pm ICT by IANSChennai, July 3 (IANS) Creating a new department to protect the interests of non- resident Tamils (NRT) and bringing a motion in parliament for making Tamil a national language were some of the decisions taken at a meeting here Saturday to discuss the next course of action on the resolutions passed at the Tamil meet held last month in Coimbatore.
The meeting chaired by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi was attended by central and state ministers of the DMK party besides officials.
It was decided that a request will be made to the chief minister to set up a new department for the welfare of NRTs and to assist in promotion of Tamil language overseas.
The meeting also decided in favour of bringing a motion in parliament for making Tamil an official language at the national level.
On the resettlement of the internally displaced Tamils in Sri Lanka, the meeting was informed that the chief minister will write a letter to the prime minister. The state government has already written to the secretary, ministry of external affairs.
It was also decided that the state government would write to the central government to take action on usage of Tamil in the Madras High Court.
