- Tegucigalpa (Honduras), Oct 30 (DPA) The Organization of American States (OAS) has announced an agreement between Honduras’ interim president Roberto Micheletti and the ousted president Manuel Zelaya to reinstate the latter to end the political crisis in in the country.
The deal should lead to the formation of a government of national reconciliation, Micheletti said. Elections scheduled for late November should take place as planned. The deal was struck Thursday night.
Zelaya was toppled June 28 as he was seeking to change Honduras’ constitution to allow him another term in office. He was thrown out of the country by the armed forces.
The international community and the OAS see Zelaya as the legitimate president and have repeatedly demanded his return to office.
Zelaya had been accused of violating the constitution, treason and abuse of office, and his opponents had been pushing to have him put on trial.
On Sep 21, he managed to return to Honduras and took refuge in the Brazilian embassy.
