Dave Bing has been elected as the mayor of Detroit, on Tuesday, 5th of May 2009. In his famous victory speech Bing mentioned “The real work starts now,” referring to his plan of action. Bing also mentioned that his main objective was to bring back values relating to honesty, efficiency, integrity and transparency into the Mayor’s office.
According to official data, Bing won with 52.3% votes in his favor. His opponent, Ken Cockrel Jr. had received 44,703 votes on his side. It is quite interesting to note that both Dave Bing and Ken Cockrel Jr. are Democrats.
Bing has been elected to serve the remaining term of the now jailed Democrat, Kwame Kilpatrick. Kilpatrick had resigned from his office in September after which he was jailed for lying during a civil trial in order to cover up an issue with the chief of his staff. For this reason Bing will have to run for elections once again so that he can serve a full term of 4 years in the Mayor’s seat. The general election for the office will be held on 3rd November, this year.
It will be interesting to note that the founder of The Bing Group, Dave Bing, had announced that he would run for the Mayor’s position when Kilpatrick resigned from his office. Experts feel that the possible reason for Cockrel’s defeat in the elections is because he was very close to Kilpatrick. Earlier, on Tuesday Bing mentioned that he would mention the names of 31 people who would help him in his term.
