Washington, May 31, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Although they have voted or it, the Congress has recently announced that it would take it months, possibly more, to actually bring into effect the repeal of the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” law that has been in the military for decades now. The announcement was made by the Defense Secretary of the United States, Robert Gates. He made the announcement after the Republicans announced that they will not be allowing the repeal of the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” law. The law, which bans soldiers in the United States army- military, navy or air force- to be open about their sexuality, only in cases if they are gay or lesbian, is currently being widely reviewed in the country, with many of the eminent Congressmen demanding that it be repealed.
After and if the law is repealed, the proposal for another law would be put forward, one that would be allowing all gay and lesbian soldiers to be open about their sexuality, without fearing that it might cost them their careers, which is exactly what the current law states. Robert Gates commented that repealing the law would not be an easy task, especially considering that it is the feelings of an entire nation that has to be taken into consideration not to mention waiting for the review of the military of the United States itself.
However, the voting of the Congress on an amendment of the law has not been taken favorably by all. According to Admiral Mike Mullen, the chairmen of the Joint Chief of Staff commented that he would have preferred the Congress to wait for a few more days before actually giving the nod to the amendment.
