Kolkata, Jan 20 (IANS) The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) has adopted a wait and watch policy for firming up alliances ahead of the 2014 general elections as it foresees realignment of political forces after the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls, said party chief Prakash Karat Friday.
“Many of these (non-Congress, non-BJP secular) parties where they will stand, where they will stay (in 2014) - it’s difficult to say now. The UP election is important as its results may see changes in the positions of the parties,” he told media persons here.
Karat said the Marxists would continue to work towards a left and democratic alternative to the policies of the present central government.
“Our central focus is to rally left and democratic forces. The party will work with other democratic and secular parties on issues concerning the people’s interests, secularism and national solidarity.”.
On Uttar Pradesh, Karat said his party was staunchly opposed to the Bahujan Samaj Party which has a “record of misrule and has taken away thousands of acres forcefully”.
Asked about his party’s stand on the Communist Party of India’s call for merger of the two communist outfits, Karat said: “This is an onoing dialogue between us. They (CPI) had raised the issue of merger in the past. We raised the issue of closer left coordination. And for that we feel closer coordination between CPI and CPI-M is required”.
