Cow, poor, women would be our priority: Uma Bharti

Lucknow, July 21 (IANS) Accusing the Mayawati-led government of not making efforts to improve law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Uma Bharti said here Thursday that safety of ‘gai’ (cow), ‘gareeb’ (poor) and ‘nari’ (women) would top her party’s agenda if it comes to power.
“Lawlessness, anarchy and rule of evil prevail in the state. But we will put an end to all this. Safety and protection of gai, gareeb and nari would be our priority after coming to power in the state,” Uma Bharti told reporters.
“It’s shocking and surprising that in a state ruled by a woman chief minister, there is no one to listen to the women who are frequently being targeted by criminals and anti-social elements,” she added.
Uma Bharti, who staged a silent sit-in to protest the rising crimes against women, said: “Almost daily we get to hear women being subjected to physical assaults…Despite the fact that most of the women victims are from backward categories, the chief minister, who herself is a Dalit, has not taken any sincere steps to control the law and order situation.”
The BJP had called upon the women victims and their families to join Uma Bharti’s sit-in.
“The father of the teenaged girl, who was brutally killed in a police station in Lakhimpur Kheri, also participated in the silent demonstration,” BJP spokesperson Vijay Bahadur Pathak told reporters.
“…We are quite confident that on account of poor law and order, the Mayawati government would be dethroned in the upcoming 2012 elections,” he added.
