December 22nd, 2009 - 9:20 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Dhaka, Dec 22 (IANS) A Dhaka court will Wednesday issue death warrants against five former army officers, who are now in the condemned cells, for killing Bangladesh’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman 34 years ago.
After issuing the warrants, the trial court will ask the senior superintendent of Dhaka Central Jail to take necessary steps to execute the death sentences, reported the website of The Daily Star.
The five convicts are Syed Farooq Rahman, Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, Bazlul Huda, A.K.M. Mohiuddin Ahmed and Mohiuddin Ahmed.
The convicts are likely to seek review of the judgment and later seek presidential pardon.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said the jail authorities would take steps to execute the five convicts 21-28 days after receiving the death warrants.
He said the process of executing the killers of Mujibur Rahman and his family members would not stop even if the convicts filed review petitions.
“The convicts will try to stop the process of execution through review petitions with the Supreme Court. But we will try to have their petitions dismissed,” he said.
On Nov 19, the Appellate Division upheld the death sentence to a dozen killers.
Six of the convicts - Khandaker Abdur Rashid, Shariful Haque Dalim, S.H.M.B. Nur Chowdhury, A.M. Rashed Chowdhury, Abdul Mazed and Risaldar Mosleuddin Khan - are on the run.
Another, Abdul Aziz Pasha, died in June 2001 in Zimbabwe where he had taken political asylum.
