Court asks Amar Singh for medical records
October 3rd, 2009 - 7:58 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 3 (IANS) A city court Saturday asked Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh to show medical records for seeking exemption from personal appearance in a two-year-old case cheating case he has filed, and also refused to withdraw the costs imposed on him.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja pulled up Singh’s counsel for not placing on record the medical certificates while seeking exemption in the case.
“Amar Singh filed another application for exemption on the ground that he had undergone surgery at Singapore and is unable to appear before the court but the plea is not supported by any documents. On the last date of hearing, similar grounds were raised and no records were submitted…, in view of these facts, there was no reason to recall the order,” the judge said
The court, however, allowed an application filed by Singh’s counsel seeking exemption from personal appearance on health grounds and asked the lawyer to furnish his medical records on Nov 3, the next date of hearing.
The court on Feb 20 had imposed costs of Rs.5,000 on Singh after he failed to appear before it. He also did not appear on July 13.
Singh registered a case against Barun Kumar Verma on June 4, 2007 alleging that he had tried to extort money from him in connection with the hearing of a case in the Supreme Court relating to Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.
Verma allegedly claimed to be a law officer and said he had high connections in the judiciary and could sort out the cases.
Verma allegedly asked for Rs.50 million for settling the case and said he could convince Justice A.R. Lakshmanan, who was hearing a corruption case against Yadav.
