Jan 6, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Christopher Dodd, the Connecticut Senator is calling it quits and it has been officially affirmed by the Democrat officials. His political career started going downwards after he came a cropper at the 2008 presidential bid and the nation was hit by the recession. He has resolved not to opt for re-election. He was supposed to declare his decision on Wednesday. His retirement decision was preceded by Byron Dorgan’s decision to refrain from re-election. The latter is a North Dakota Democrat.
Interestingly, 66 year old Christopher Dodd holds the post of Senate Banking Committee’s chairman which played a pivotal role in coping with the economic downslide- that grabbed USA by the neck last year. After he steps down, the Democrats will have to find a candidate who is more popular than him. This is essential for preventing the public favor turning towards the Republicans. His successor is yet to be chosen but according to the assumption of the experts, Richard Blumenthal, Connecticut state Attorney General will be selected since he has an image as bring the state’s favorite political leader.
Though Christopher Dodd is stepping down, the Democrats are convinced of retaining the seat. They feel that Richard Blumenthal enjoys massive popularity in the state of Connecticut and the Republicans will not be able to snatch this seat from him. Christopher Dodd did not affirm the news of his stepping down till Monday and maintained that he was very much in the race. However, the change in decision could be sparked by some recent mishaps that he had to go through. He lost Senator Kennedy, who was among his closest friends, last summer and underwent a surgery in August for Prostrate cancer.
