Mumbai, May 12 (IANS) Over 400 Congress workers took out a rally here Thursday to protest the arrest of Rahul Gandhi in Greater Noida by Uttar Pradesh Police a day earlier.
“The farmers are not being adequately compensated and Mayawati’s dictatorial government is trying to wrest away land from the helpless farmers. We condemn the arrest of our leader Rahul Gandhi who is fighting for farmers rights,” Mumbai legislator Krishna Hegde said.
Similar protests were also held in other suburbs of western Mumbai like Santacruz, Malad and Borivali.
Gandhi was arrested in a dramatic late night swoop Wednesday while he was on a sit-in at Bhatta Parsaul village in Uttar Pradesh to support agitating farmers demanding more money for their land being acquired for a highway project.
He was released after being held for about three hours and later returned to New Delhi early Thursday.
“We are with our leader and will take out more ‘morchas’ (rallies) and demonstrate across the country if Rahulji’s demands for farmers’ compensation are not met,” Hegde said.
