Congress wants CBI probe in Goa tribal deaths
July 1st, 2011 - 9:58 pm ICT by IANSPanaji, July 1 (IANS) The state unit of Goa’s ruling Congress Friday demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the murder of two tribals in May, who were burnt to death by unidentified assailants during a tribal rights’ agitation.
Speaking to reporters after chairing the party’s executive committee meeting, state Congress president Subhash Shirodkar said that the investigative agency should be entrusted the responsibility to probe the killing.
“We want the CBI to probe the case. A judicial enquiry is fine, but both (CBI and judicial probe) would be ideal,” Shirodkar said.
The two activists were burnt alive on May 25 they were locked in a storeroom and the place sert on fire, in presence of the police. The duo - Mangesh Gaonkar and Dilip Velip - were part of a 4,000-strong gathering of tribals, who were demanding that tribals rights be implemented in the state.
The Goa government had already announced a judicial probe into the incident a week after the killing, but it has not yet begun work.
A magisterial enquiry ordered by the Goa government has already poked holes in the Goa police intelligence mechanism and has accused the police of being mute spectators to the killing of the two tribals.
