Kolkata, June 26 (IANS) In tune with its alliance partner Trinamool Congress, the West Bengal unit of the Congress Friday asked the central government to launch a joint security operation in various parts of the state where “the ruling Communists have built up a huge arms stockpiles to terrorise political rivals”.
In a letter to Home Minister P. Chidambaram, state Congress legislature party leader Manas Bhuniya demanded that joint operations by paramilitary troopers and state armed police personnel be launched in places like Garbeta and Keshpur in West Midnapore district and Mangalkot in Burdwan district.
“The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) is committing atrocities on political opponents in various parts of the state. They have also built up a huge stockpile of arms. That must be unearthed. And I have appealed to the law minister that central forces should be sent for this,” Bhuniya told reporters.
Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee, who heads the state’s main opposition Trinamool Congress, has been speaking on the same lines ever since the central and state forces launched a joint operation to flush out Maoist rebels from Lalgarh, 200 km west of here.
“They (the CPI-M) have created an atmosphere of terror in West Bengal. They are even shipping out bullets manufactured in defence units in the state,” Banerjee said in Delhi Thursday after meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on this matter.
