Congress trying to deflect attention from corruption: BJP

New Delhi, Nov 14 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Sunday charged the Congress with trying to divert the attention of the people from corruption scandals by trying to make an issue of the remarks of former Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief K.S. Sudarshan, despite the Sangh regretting them.
Former BJP president Rajnath Singh said in a statement that Congress workers were still organising “violent protests” near RSS offices though the organisation had expressed regret and distanced itself from Sudarshan’s remarks.
He said if Congress was not satisfied with the regret expressed by RSS, it had various political and legal options available. “For their satisfaction, they can adopt any of the legal options available. But violence cannot be accepted in a democracy,” he said.
Singh said there had been instances in public life when certain remarks had hurt an organisation or an individual but the response should be in keeping with democratic norms.
“The violent protests despite the regret by RSS are a reflection of the mentality of the Congress against Sangh and other Hindu organisations,” Singh said.
Noting the RSS had done a lot of work in the fields of education, welfare of tribals and farmers, he said Congress leaders had compared it to the banned Student’s Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) and even terrorist organisation, Lashkar-e-Taiba. “The Sangh and BJP demonstrated against such remarks peacefully,” he said
The Congress actions’ reflected its “feudal mentality and intolerance of opposite viewpoint”, he said.
Singh said that objectionable comemnts had been made in the past about BJP leaders including former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpyee but the party had made its views known through democratic protest.
“The Congress actions have created suspicion in the minds of people that it was trying to divert attention from various scandals including IPL (Indian Premier League), the 2G spectrum, mishandling of food stocks and Adarsh society scam by raking up an issue which has ended with the clarification given by the Sangh,” he said.
