Washington DC, May 27 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Congress is going to vote on whether to allow gay military men to openly express their sexuality preferences in the service. Congress is expected to vote on Thursday, on the proposal by Rep. Patrick Murphy. Rep. Patrick Murphy, Pennsylvania Democrat, was a serviceman who served in the Iraqi war. The proposal is calling for the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ law to be repealed. The ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ law was introduced by the Clinton administration in 1993.

However the Pentagon would be given enough time to analyze the implications and the consequences before lifting the ban. Some service chiefs however believed Congress’s vote should have been delayed, until the Pentagon has finished its survey on the law. Supporters of the bill say the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ law encouraged untruthfulness in the military. However they maintain that the military is a highly disciplined and honest institution but the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ law encourages deceit and untruths.

Gay activists and human rights groups say they have enough votes to pass the bill that will repeal the law. United States Defense Secretary, Robert Gates, said he is in support of the repeal of the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ law.
