Congress suspends two leaders for indiscipline
February 1st, 2012 - 5:27 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Mumbai, Feb 1 (IANS) Sending out a stern message against indiscipline, Maharashtra’s Congress unit Wednesday suspended two Mumbai leaders for revolting against the party leadership, an official said.
“Mumbai general secretary Ajit Sawant and senior leader Vidyarthi Singh have been suspended … until further orders,” a spokesperson for the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee told IANS.
Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee chief Manikrao Thakre said in Osmanabad earlier in the day that Sawant was acting like a tool for those opposed to the Congress.
Sawant had been vocal in his criticism of the state leadership, initially questioning the alliance with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) for the civic polls in Mumbai and later demanding that ‘loyalists’ be accommodated in ticket distribution.
Singh had claimed that tickets for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections were sold for lakhs of rupees.
Reacting to his suspension, Sawant said the party’s decision was “regrettable” and wondered whether the reins of the BMC would be handed over to “corrupt leaders”.
Sawant also asked whether Thakre would initiate similar disciplinary action against corrupt leaders in the party.
