New Delhi, March 31 (IANS) The Congress party Tuesday released a list of eight candidates from Karnataka, Gujarat and Delhi for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, pitting legislator Suresh Patel against the Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate L.K. Advani from Gandhinagar.
The prominent candidates from Karnataka include M. Veerappa Moily, Congress general secretary and chairman of media department, and senior leader Margaret Alva.
Alva will contest from Uttara Kannada while Moily has been fielded from Chikballapur.
Alva, MP for five terms from 1974 to 2004 and former minister, had been dropped from the post of general secretary as well as from the membership of the Congress Working Committee and the Central Election Committee in November 2008 on charges of indiscipline after she accused that party nominations were sold during the Karnataka polls in May 2008.
Congress general secretary B.K. Hariprasad said that both Moily and Alva would have a easy way to victory as Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) has decided not to field candidates against them on the ground of “personal relations”.
In Gujarat, the Congress has fielded Suresh Patel from the prestigious Gandhinagar constituency. Patel is the sitting legislator from the Kalol constituency in Gujarat.
The Congress has fielded Mahabal Mishra from West Delhi. The party had earlier announced the other candidates for Delhi.
Polling in Karnataka and Gujarat would be held on April 30 while Delhi would go to polls on May 7. Results would be declared on May 16.
