New Delhi, Jan 21 (IANS) The Congress Thursday refused to comment on the issue of release of Nalini Sriharan, who has been in jail for about l9 years after being convicted of involvement in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.
Answering queries about the possibility of release of Nalini from prison following a meeting of advisory board constituted by the Tamil Nadu government, Congress spokesman Manish Tewari said it was absolutely inappropriate to react to such reports in the absence of any formal intimation.
“These are sensitive legal matters. There is nothing official which is in the public space or which is known to us. I think it is absolutely inappropriate in the absence of any formal intimation for the party to react,” he told reporters here.
Tewari also did not comment on questions relating to Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s meeting with Nalini in the jail in 2008 and Sonia Gandhi’s support for commuting the sentence from capital punishment to life imprisonment.
“At that time, the Congress president herself had given in writing to the president, saying what she had to say. It will not be appropriate to add anything to it,” he said.
Media reports said Thursday that an advisory board constituted by the Tamil Nadu government had agreed to recommend release of Nalini.
