Congress MP asked to explain allegationsMay 7th, 2008 - 12:11 am ICT by admin
Jammu, May 6 (IANS) The Congress party Tuesday demanded from its MP Madan Lal Sharma an explanation about his “false and unwarranted” remarks that Congress president Sonia Gandhi had been asked to pardon Jammu and Kashmir Speaker Tara Chand and former state party unit chief Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed for their alleged involvement in a sex scandal. The Congress high command refused to accept Sharma’s verbal denial that he had not mentioned the name of Sonia Gandhi, and asked him to give in writing what he had said and the context in which he had spoken.
Sharma made his remarks at a party rally in Khour in Jammu Sunday. He alleged that the speaker and Sayeed were involved in a sex scandal and that the two were saved only when pardon was sought for them from Sonia Gandhi at the behest of Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad.
However, Sharma later denied having made the allegations.
State Congress president Saifuddin Soz issued a show cause notice to Sharma. “I have taken serious notice of false, uncalled for and unwarranted remarks that you made at a public meeting in Khour (Jammu) on May 4, 2008, alleging that you had approached the Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad who then intervened in the matter and saved Tara Chand, Speaker J&K legislative assembly, and then PCC president Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed from being implicated in the alleged case of sex abuse.”
Sharma has been asked to explain within a week huis conduict and why disciplinary action should not be taken against him, Soz said.
