Rahul Gandhi Allahabad, Nov 14 (IANS) Two union ministers and two legislators of the Congress roughed up a handful of Samajwadi Party activists who broke through the security cordon to show black flags to party general secretary Rahul Gandhi as he arrived for his rally near here Monday.

Union ministers Jitin Prasada and R.P.N. Singh pounced on the young protesters, while state legislators Pramod Tiwari and Naseeb Pathan started thrashing them.

Two of the protesters, who fell flat on the ground after being overpowered, were kicked by the Congress leaders until the policemen on duty took them in their custody and packed them off to the nearest police station.

“We wanted to express our protest against Rahul Gandhi who had failed to keep his word to get students union elections held at the Allahabad University, which is controlled by the central government,” said one of the protesters Ashok Yadav, before he was whisked away in a police vehicle.

Commenting on the incident, Congress leader and union Law Minister Salman Khurshid said: “Since the protesters had suddenly stormed into the helipad area, someone had to stop them because how would you know what they intended to do? For all you know they could have been terrorists, so whatever the Congress leaders did was justified.”
