New Delhi, July 2 (IANS) Congress leaders here Friday urged the Election Commission to review the voters list in Gujarat to weed out “bogus voters”.
A Congress delegation comprising general secretary B.K. Hariprasad, Leader of Opposition in the Gujarat Assembly Shaktisinh Gohil, state unit chief Siddharth Patel and party spokesman Manish Tewari met Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla.
Tewari said there were large scale irregularities in the voters’ list in Gujarat. Demanding an immediate review of the list, he appealed to the chief election commissioner to stop the BJP government from using e-voting in the local bodies elections, expressing apprehensions it may be manipulated.
He claimed that nearly 30 lakh names of voters were duplicate and it had raised questions over the Narendra Modi-led government’s performance in the 2007 assembly elections and the 2009 Lok Sabha polls.
Patel alleged that at least 7,000 “bogus voters” had been added in each of the assembly constituencies by using various methods. He said Congress had lost nearly 45 seats in the 182-member Gujarat assembly in the last polls by a margin of less than 5,000 votes.
The rolls were prepared by state government employees who are amenable to pressure, he said, demanding the Election Commission should supervise the scrutiny of the voters’ list in the state.
