Congress leaders from Telangana meet Azad

Telangana New Delhi, July 5 (IANS) Congress leaders from Andhra Pradesh’s Telangana region met union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, who supervises the party’s affairs in the state, here Tuesday in a bid to persuade the central leadership to accept demand for creating a separate state.

Congress MP Madhu Goud Yaskhi, who took part in the meeting, said that they explained to Azad the sensitivity of the situation in the region.

“We told him that the process (for creating a new state) has to begin immediately,” Yaskhi told IANS.

Parliament member from Nizamabad, Yaskhi, who sent his resignation to the speaker Monday, said Telangana was a people’s movement cutting across party lines.

He said if wider consultations have to be held, these should take place without delay.

Azad told a TV channel later that discussions have to be held with people of various regions of the state on the sensitive issue.

“It is time that we start discussions,” he said.

The Congress, on its part, did not comment on the emerging situation created by the resignations of party MPs, legislators and ministers in support of the demand for a Telangana state.

“It is a sensitive and emotional issue. We are aware of the situation. An appropriate decision will be taken at an appropriate time,” Congress spokesperson and general secretary Shakeel Ahmed said.

Ten Congress MPs and 40 legislators resigned Monday in support of the demand for creating a new state of Telangana.
