Lucknow, June 14 (IANS) The Congress party in Uttar Pradesh Tuesday again demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the murder of a 14-year-old girl whose body was found inside a police station compound.

Refuting the state government’s claim that the girl was “murdered” but “not raped”, state Congress president Rita Bahuguna Joshi led a delegation to Governor B.L. Joshi and demanded a CBI inquiry into the case.

“There is sufficient evidence to suggest that the girl was murdered after being raped inside the Nighasan police station of Lakhimpur district,” the Congress leader said at a press conference here.

“We cannot rely on whatever action is initiated by the state government. It appears to be a mere eyewash. Only a CBI inquiry can bring out the truth,” she said.

She further sought a third autopsy to be carried out by a joint team from Lucknow’s Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi.

“Both the post-mortems carried out by local doctors and later by a team of Lucknow doctors were systematically doctored to conceal rape of the poor girl by policemen,” she claimed.

In her memorandum to the governor, Bahuguna Joshi has also sought an ex-gratia payment of Rs.10 lakh as well as security to the family of the victim.

Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh had Monday demanded a CBI probe into the case, saying the state-ordered investigation is a “sham” and “cover up”.

The teenaged girl’s body was found hanging from a tree inside the police station premises June 10.

Initially the police dismissed it as a case of suicide, but a second autopsy confirmed that the girl was strangulated.

As many as 11 policemen posted at the police station and three doctors who conducted the first autopsy have been suspended and the district superintendent of police was transferred.
