Congress holds massive rally to woo farmersMarch 9th, 2008 - 12:07 pm ICT by admin
New Delhi, March 9 (IANS) Farmers in thousands thronged the Ramlila grounds here Sunday to take part in the rally organised by the Congress party to send across the message of a farmer-friendly government ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. The rally started with sundry speakers eulogising the Nehru-Gandhi family for its contribution to the cause of farmers and the ‘aam aadmi’ (common man) over the years.
The main speakers at the rally are Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The rally has been aptly named Dhanyawad Abhinandan (thanksgiving felicitation) for the Rs. 600 billion loan waiver for small and marginal farmers announced by Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Feb 29.
The Congress party tried to pull in as many people as were attracted by Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati here on Feb 24. Both the parties are trying to out-do each other in proving their love and concern for the dalits and the weaker sections of society.
The rally aims at convincing the farmers that the Congress stands for the rights of farmers. Nearly two-thirds of India’s population is involved in agriculture.
Other than the Delhi unit, the Pradesh Congress Committees (PCCs) of all north Indian states and especially those of Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh were given the responsibility of bringing supporters to the rally to make it a success.
