New Delhi, June 3 (IANS) The Future Challenges Group of the Congress, which has young leaders including Rahul Gandhi as its members, Tuesday decided that the candidates for the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls should be confirmed in advance. The group, which has Congress leaders Jyotiraditya Scindia, Sachin Pilot, Sandeep Dikshit and Jairam Ramesh among its members, met in the aftermath of the May 25 debacle in the Karnataka polls. To check more losses in the forthcoming assembly and Lok Sabha polls, the group agreed that the list of candidates should be decided well in advance.

“This will help the candidate to start working in his constituency and also prevent infighting,” said a Congress leader.

Rahul Gandhi had declared Monday that there was need for announcing the candidates much before elections. Failure to do this was one of the reasons for the poor performance in Karnataka where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) almost reached the half-way mark.

Encouraging intra-party democracy, something that Gandhi has mentioned earlier, was also discussed, according to sources.

“It has been decided that there is a need for strengthening the organisation upto the booth committee level,” one of the members said.

More emphasis on publicity of the achievements of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government was also discussed in the meeting. The need for more transparency in the organisation was also suggested.

The Future Challenges Group was formed in September 2007. It holds periodic meetings to chalk out the future course of action. Congress president Sonia Gandhi formed this group of young MPs and leaders to better utilize their ideas and energy.
