Congress fields ex cricketer Madan Lal from Himachal (Lead)

Bharatiya Janata Party New Delhi, March 21 (IANS) Former cricketer Madan Lal Saturday joined the Congress and was fielded as the party nominee from Hamirpur constituency in Himachal Pradesh.
The all-rounder, who was part of the World Cup winning Indian squad of 1983, joined the party at a function here.

“I will do both batting and bowling for the party,” the 58-year-old cricketer turned politician told reporters at the Congress headquarters.

On this, senior party leader Anand Sharma in a lighter vein said: “Madan Lal will do both batting and bowling and the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) will do the fielding.”

Madan Lal was also flanked by Congress general secretaries Janardan Dwivedi, M. Veerappa Moily and Mohsina Kidwai.

After Mohammed Azharuddin, Madan Lal is the second cricketer to join the Congress.

Former Indian captain Azharuddin joined the Congress Feb 19. However, the party has not yet announced if it will field Azharuddin as a candidate.
