Congress distances itself from R.K. Anand
July 29th, 2009 - 4:45 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, July 29 (IANS) The Congress Wednesday distanced itself from lawyer R.K. Anand, who had once contested the Lok Sabha polls as a party candidate, after the Supreme Court upheld a ruling convicting him for contempt of court.
“It is a matter between the court and Anand, we don’t have to make any political statement regarding this, the law will take its own course,” Congress spokesperson Shakeel Ahmad told IANS.
Anand was the Congress candidate for the 2004 Lok Sabha elections from South Delhi constituency. He also had high profile clients from the Congress party like former prime minister P.V. Narasimha Rao and former union minister H.K.L. Bhagat. He was also reportedly close to former external affairs minister Natwar Singh.
The Supreme Court has upheld a Delhi High Court ruling convicting Anand for trying to forge a nexus with defence counsel I.U. Khan to shield main culprit Sanjeev Nanda in the 1999 BMW hit-and-run case.
Six people, including three policemen, were crushed to death by a BMW car driven by Sanjeev Nanda in an inebriated state on Lodhi Road in the early hours of Jan 10, 1999.
