Raipur, Feb 8 (IANS) The Congress Monday demanded immediate suspension of a senior Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer in Chhattisgarh, B.L. Agrawal, whose 220 bank accounts and assets worth millions of rupees were unearthed during Income Tax department searches last week.
“Why is Chhattisgarh’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government delaying the suspension of the IAS officer against whom there is now a clear case of amassing assets disproportionate to his known source of income?” Congress state general secretary Ramesh Varlyani asked.
“Congress demands he should be sacked without a single minute’s delay as he opened over 220 bank accounts in fake names in a bid to turn his massive black money into white. I appreciate the Madhya Pradesh BJP government for suspending an IAS couple last week soon after the IT raids confirmed they had made assets in millions illegally,” Varlyani told IANS.
IT sleuths here had raided last week the residence of Agarwal, who is the state’s agriculture secretary, the business establishments of his close relatives and his chartered accountant Sunil Agrawal. The searches yielded documents suggesting that the IAS officer has amassed assets worth millions.
The raids also revealed that Agrawal, the IAS officer of 1988 batch, has at least 220 bank accounts, several of them opened in fake names and addresses.
The Madhya Pradesh government Friday suspended a Bhopal-based IAS couple - Tinu Joshi, the principal secretary in the women and child development department, and her husband Arvind Joshi, principal secretary of the jail and parliamentary affairs department, after IT department found over Rs.3 crore (Rs.30 million) in unaccounted cash in a raid on their residence Feb 4.
