Congress delegation visits West Bengal’s Mangalkot
August 9th, 2009 - 10:58 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, Aug 9 (IANS) A Congress party delegation Sunday visited the trouble-prone Mangalkot area in West Bengal to assess the law and order situation there.
The team, led by state Congress working president Subrata Mukherjee, toured Dhanyarukhi village in Burdwan district and also held a public meeting with a handful of people.
“There’s a silence of graveyard in Mangalkot. At least 200 people are still homeless and they are living at various relief camps,” state Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader Manas Bhuinya said.
“We want all people to be back in their village of Mangalkot. The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)-sponsored violence should come to an end so that people can lead a normal and peaceful life here,” he said.
Mukherjee said the Congress was the only opposition party capable of taking on the CPI-M and its “hired musclemen”.
“We won’t concede even an inch of space to the CPI-M without a fight,” Mukherjee said.
Eight Congress legislators were injured last month when they were attacked allegedly by armed CPI-M cadres at Dhanyarukhi village near Mangalkot.
A 14-member Congress delegation led by Bhuinya had entered Dhanyarukhi village for distributing relief to party supporters whose houses had been burnt after the murder of CPI-M district committee member Falguni Mukherjee.
