Congress cries foul over defamatory question on Mercy Ravi
October 25th, 2009 - 12:33 am ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 24 (IANS) Congress leaders in Kerala protested Saturday after the name of the late Congress leader Mercy Ravi, who was the wife of Overseas Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi, appeared in a question paper.
At the mid-term examination in the English paper of plus two students in the state Friday, students were asked to write a critical letter to the editor for giving prominent coverage by the media after her death.
Mercy Ravi passed away last month in Chennai and her last rites took place at Chertalai in Alappuzha district.
Several Congress leaders Saturday attributed this to the pro-Left teachers’ union.
“This is unfortunate and the education minister should apologise not only to the family of Mercy Ravi but to the society at large and should take appropriate action against those who have been responsible,” said Leader of Opposition Oommen Chandy.
State Education Minister M.A. Baby, who is in Delhi, told reporters there it was unfortunate and sought to convey his apologies to Vayalar Ravi. He said his department would conduct an inquiry into this.
